Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
