During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have defied his youth and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.
