Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Loss
Arne Slot conceded that it was understandable for doubts to be raised about his position following a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool suffered their ninth loss in twelve games, marking the club's poorest streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing evening at Anfield.
“I'm confident, I'm fine, I have got significant support from above,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and get a victory obviously but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it is normal that doubts arise.”
He added, “I'm comfortable with my role. It is not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's necessary that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with The Board
Upon being questioned to expand on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and for me and those talks happen but they don't phone me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard conversations we have I perceive the belief. However I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat yet so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Problems and Player Reaction
Slot expressed regret over known weaknesses from his squad in their Champions League loss, specifically wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones said.
“It is unacceptable. I don't need to wait to consider it. I’m past feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I play for the side I follow. I’m a fan, and I've watched this club since I was young.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side going through a spell of this nature with outcomes this poor.”
He stated, “However we still have that badge on our shirts. And as long as it is removed, we’re always going to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to the top, show everyone once more what this club is about and why it's known as the best team in the world.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it must improve.”
