Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD issued video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
