The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him participating in the next presidential race.
