Grief as Renowned South African DJ Gunned Down in Johannesburg.
A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation grappling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old entertainer was accosted by three individuals, with one opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
The reason of the shooting has not been established and no one has been arrested are in custody, police said.
Details of the Attack
Authorities indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a premises close to the Carlton Centre.
He had been present for hours at the site managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, it was reported.
"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement stated.
Security camera video reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what looked like a security uniform firing shots on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down a short distance away.
Police added that Stock had an gun that was not fired and nothing was taken during the incident.
Key evidence, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.
Appeal for Witnesses
Officials are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.
"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to find their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.
Outpouring of Grief
His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to process his death.
"Words fail me. I am shattered," she stated.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about subjects not many people were willing to tackle. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the community to avoid sharing graphic images from the incident, noting this was an deeply traumatic time, particularly for Stock's three sons.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a South African digital satellite entertainment channel.
Beyond his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various business ventures, including protective services, providing elite guarding services and protecting major functions across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in building administration and was involved in property reclaimations.
National Shock
His death has caused national trauma and led to an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and various organizations.
A cabinet official commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's killing.
"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even spoke up against me and my policies as a minister. He was a true embodiment of who we ought to be," the minister added.
A political leader stated the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director noted that "DJ Warras was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an lasting impression."
In a communication, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
