RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
