A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
